What’s new with The Natural Cannabis Company? Are there any current or future projects you’d like to share?
Dona Frank: We are in the process of permitting which is taking up an incredible amount of energy – but has been pretty rewarding. We are in the beginning stages of our launch for the seasonal “Harvest Box,” prepping for “Art Basel Miami” in December and getting ready for the big announcement for next year’s High Art theme.
It’s now 6 months into California’s legalization of cannabis. How has it affected your business, good and/or bad?
DF: The State of California was not prepared for what has essentially become a shit-show. It’s too bad because there are a lot of amazing farmers that are being squeezed out due to badly written law, regulations and just plain old bad planning. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the cannabis industry in California right now?
DF: The IRS is still going after “selected” cannabis businesses. Canada is buying up much of the existing industry, yet the IRS watches this happen and does nothing. The process feels fixed. Also, still no banking.
What do you wish more clients and consumers knew about?
DF: The IRS and how they are gutting cannabis business to their own pleasure and folly based on an antiquated 1980 law that was created for cocaine smugglers (280E), the way that cannabis is being called a commodity and is not being treated as an agricultural product, yet having to follow all agricultural rules for cultivation, how the established taxation and distribution system is a farce and of course, no banking still.
What are you most excited about for the future?
DF: Every. Fucking. Thing. The future is very, very bright!!
