Properly cultivated, dried and cured cannabis will have a fragrant aroma and distinct flavor. The more experience you have with cannabis strains, the more appreciation you’ll have for the unique and delicious flavors each plant provides. Like the wine and food industries, the cannabis industry even has its own lexicon of tasting descriptors. Some you may be familiar with include gassy, fuel, citrus and pine. Improperly dried and cured cannabis will taste grassy, like dried lawn clippings or hay.
There isn’t much you can do to enhance the flavor of your cannabis before it comes to market but if you value quality cannabis, you can make sure you’re experiencing the very best it has to offer by doing a few simple things after you buy.
- Store it properly. Air and light are the two primary enemies of dried cannabis. Cannabis left out unsealed will rapidly dry out, taking flavor and valuable cannabinoids with it. Keep your cannabis sealed in an airtight container, ideally glass, in a cool, dark area. Don’t store it in plastic bags or plastic containers which create a static charge that damages delicate terpenes and cannabinoids.
- Keep your gear clean. Whether you vape or smoke, it’s important to keep your delivery method clean. Resin build-up and burnt residue will pollute the natural flavor of whatever you’re currently enjoying. For vaporizers, keep your chamber clean as well as the mouthpiece. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning but generally isopropyl alcohol is a good way to dissolve sticky build-up. If you use glassware like pipes or bongs, clean them every time you smoke a new strain and always use fresh water in water pipes. If you’ve neglected your gear for a while, you’ll be shocked at how much better your cannabis tastes afterwards!
- Ditch the butane. If you’re a fan of smoking cannabis, upgrading to an electric lighter has a few benefits. Not only does it improve the taste of your cannabis by eliminating butane residue during your inhale, but you may even notice your smoke is smoother and causes less throat and mouth irritation.
